There are a number of occasions where an agency, conference or symposium requires a brief, succinct but powerful presentation. In addition to longer presentations, Edgework also offers brief presentations (one to two hours) on a number of subjects. Such brief presenations can be ideal for:

  • Keynote address or break-out sessions at conferences
  • Staff meetings
  • Regularly scheduled continuing education times
These workshops are tailor-made to the needs of the agency. Although the general topic may be the same, the requirements of various organizations (police, social services, business, etc.) will be different. Edgework ensures that the material is presented in a context that is professionally relevant. Some of the topics that Edgework offers in brief training seminars include:

GENERAL APPLICATION

  1. Recognition of patterns of aggression
  2. De-escalation strategies for angry people. Recognition and effective communication with mentally ill or drug intoxicated individuals
  3. Recognition of rage, and verbal control strategies for enraged people
  4. Communication with mentally ill individuals (in these brief trainings, one or another syndrome will be addresses as relevant to crisis intervention)
  5. New Training! Stress Reduction - Using simple movements from Chinese martial arts, called qigong, one can, in brief minutes, physically reorganize to feel more vibrant and alive.  This training, from two to four hours, is specifically for non-athletes and requires no overly vigorous movement or stretching.  That said, anyone, even the best trained athlete, will find something of value in these movements. I (Ellis) have used them to calm myself before court testimony, and use them to take frequent several minute breaks when required to be working in an office setting.

FOR BUSINESS AND SOCIAL SERVICES ORGANIZATIONS

  1. Centering yourself in crisis situations.
  2. The texture of relationship -- the study of interpersonal space as a means of recognition of potential danger
  3. What doesn't work -- the biggest mistakes that people make in trying to de-escalate or calm aggressive people
  4. Physical organization in the face of aggression
  5. Supervisory problems with employees -- a consideration of tactical communication to minimize or eliminate problematic behaviors on the worksite
  6. Evasion of physical assault

SPECIFIC TO SOCIAL SERVICES ORGANIZATIONS

  1. A consideration of the psychopath within your milieu -- how to recognize such individuals, and how best to protect yourselves and your clients.
  2. Safety on outreaches
  3. A brief version of "Grand Rounds: Clinical Supervision Concerning Difficult Cases"
  4. Interventions with Suicidal Individuals
