SAFETY AT WORK:
Effective Communication Strategies to Calm Angry Individuals

.

It is a tragic fact that increasing numbers of people in our society choose aggression or even violence either to fulfill their wishes or in an attempt to alleviate their anger and sense of grievance. Customers at a variety of work settings become threatening. Co-workers or employees intimidate or even resort to violence. These problems are compounded by substance abuse or mental illness. Aggressive behavior often seems to occur with no advanced warning or understandable reason. Because of this, many people go to work with a sense of dread.

.

Edgework offers training in:

.

Methods of calming and de-escalation with aggressive individuals
Recognition and effective communication with mentally ill or drug intoxicated individuals
Specific recommendations on hiring practices, as well as other human resources issues concerning existing employees who present danger
Specific training on domestic violence and stalking issues
Edgework's Program

.

The core program is set up in an initial consultation and offers strategies specific to the needs of the work site and its employees, as well as the type of individuals who present with problematic behavior.

Enhancing Safety at Work

.

Mr. Amdur works with human resources, security and investigation units, and EAP staff to plan how best to work with difficult employees who may or may not present danger to themselves or others. Staff present difficult cases and situations, suitably anonymous. Mr Amdur both facilitates discussion and offers strategic suggestions on how best to deal with the individual of concern, both ethically and from a position of strength. In addition:

.

--Mr. Amdur offers general information on passive-aggressive behavior as well as that of other individuals who manage their lives using strategies that cause either themselves or others trouble

.

---Recognition of and strategies to deal with the manipulative and destructive employee - the so-called “functional psychopath” who takes delight in quietly undermining both solidarity among employees as well as either destroying or taking credit for other people’s work.

.

---Reworking customer or client relations so that they can approach and work with your company with as little friction and as much welcome as is possible.

.

Consultation

.

Edgework also provides companies with individualized consultation to deal effectively with threatening individuals or others who are causing concern.  This includes risk safety planning, and risk assessment, either  through consultation with concerned staff or face-to-face assessment of the individual of concern.
